🏴☠️ 🦐 Boil & Brew for Veterans - Your Friday Lowdown
AB chats with Art Collective, Bass Pro set to Open, Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife + more St. Augustine news & events
Good Morning, St. Augustine!
I’m James and this is the Old City Lowdown—as smooth and satisfying as a well-earned bourbon at the week’s end.
A massive thank you goes out to St. Augustine Distillery for an incredible preview of their upcoming Whiskey Wonderland event, set for November 22. Last night, they treated media guests to a sneak peek of what’s in store, and it promises to be a fantastic evening. Special thanks to Amanda Olivero and Somer White for their warm hospitality!

🎣 Bass Pro Shops to Open Nov. 20
St. Augustine will soon welcome a major outdoor retailer, as Bass Pro Shops opens its latest location on Nov. 20. The 100,000-square-foot store, nestled on 18 acres near Buc-ee’s and Costco, will offer a wide range of outdoor gear, from fishing to camping equipment, as well as a unique 12,000-gallon aquarium. 🪖 Veterans Day Celebration at Anastasia Baptist Church
St. Johns County’s 2024 Veterans Day Celebration is set for Monday, November 11, at Anastasia Baptist Church, featuring Sheriff Robert A. Hardwick as keynote speaker, a patriotic “Old Glory” performance by Vann Morris, and music from the St. Augustine High School Chorale. Attendees can explore military displays, including the Traveling Vietnam and War on Terror Walls, and visit over 40 exhibits from local nonprofits and military groups. Hosted by the Veterans Council of St. Johns County and Military Officers Association’s Ancient City Chapter, this event honors veterans with community and history on full display.
💸 Grant Boosts Senior Center Accessibility Project
Thanks to a $545,000 grant from the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds, the St. Johns County Council on Aging can begin phase one of its “Shelter and Shade” project, improving accessibility and safety at its Marine St. senior center. The project includes elevating the building’s entrance, adding a portico, and other site-wide enhancements. This funding will also unlock matching grant opportunities for phase two, which will enhance outdoor facilities for the Sunshine Center’s adult daycare program.

By Ansley Bates
Two Fridays ago, I stumbled across a new art gallery downtown. Drawn by the possibility of finding fresh, local art, I tapped on the paper-covered door, curious. To my surprise, Mare Martelli, the heart and soul behind Art Collective St. Augustine, welcomed me in with a radiant smile. Amid the creative chaos of setting up, she invited me into her world—a world that she and the contributing artists have poured so much heart into.
Sometimes as I edit, I feel as if my hands cannot properly capture and communicate the beauty of the stories I tell. Sitting with the footage later, I began to see that each snippet revealed an intricate mosaic of passion and vision that brought this gallery to life. It’s not always easy to understand the pieces, but together they tell a story that makes perfect sense.
I hope this Mare’s story inspires you as it did me. Next time you find yourself wandering, don’t be scared to knock on a door, meet a stranger, and uncover the beautiful stories waiting to be shared.
