🎒 Back to School tax holiday is underway
It’s about time to go pick up that new laptop you’ve been eyeing. Florida’s annual back-to-school tax holiday is back, running for two weeks through August 11. During this time, you won’t have to pay that pesky sales tax on clothes, shoes, and book bags priced at $100 or less; school supplies at $50 or less; learning aids at $30 or less; and personal computers at $1,500 or less. The tax holiday is projected to save Floridians $97.2 million. (more info)
🏖️ Saint Johns County presents State of the Beaches
On July 17, St. Johns County's “State of the Beaches” presentation highlighted its efforts in managing 32 miles of shoreline. The county reviewed six completed projects from 2023 and four ongoing projects in 2024. (more info)
💡 St. Augustine Lighthouse to celebrate the Big 1-5-0
The St. Augustine Lighthouse, first illuminated on Oct. 15, 1874, is celebrating its 150th birthday with a whole bunch of events and activities this fall. The festivities will run Oct 14-18 and will include new learning activities, community events, and special merch. (more info)
🗑️ Your trash truck may look different this week
Beginning Thursday, SJC’s new residential waste collector, FCC Environmental Services Florida, LLC, we begin servicing county residents as part of a multi-year deal. Saint Johns County states that 87% of residents can expect no changes in service and customer fees will remain the same for the first year. FCC Environmental will be responsible for collection of household garbage, yard waste, recycling, and bulk waste per the county. (more info)
🌀 REMINDER: Free Sandbag Day for SJC Residents
Mentioned last week in the Lowdown, Saint Johns County is giving out 12,000 free, pre-filled sandbags on Wednesday, July 31 between 9AM-1PM. As action starts to pick up in the tropics, it can’t hurt to get ahead of the game. Bring ID/proof of SJC residency to one of the following locations to pick up your free sandbags (limit 12 per car):

🍽️ Multi-Concept Restaurant Opens This Fall
A new restaurant, 36 Granada, is opening this fall in historic St. Augustine, blending The French Pantry and Little Miss Ha. It will feature four unique dining concepts, including a speakeasy bar and a cooking class studio. Located near Flagler College, this unique venue will offer over 200 seats. (more info)
🏥 New Baptist Health Project Under Review
Baptist Health plans a 118,000-square-foot medical campus near SilverLeaf in St. Johns County, featuring a 24/7 emergency center, office space, a maintenance building, and a helipad. Set to open in early 2026, the 22-acre site was purchased for $5.75 million in 2019. (more info)
🪴 Sprouts Coming to SJC
St. Johns County issued a building permit for a new Sprouts Farmers Market at the Shoppes of St. Johns Parkway. Replacing Earth Fare in the plaza, it is expected to create over 100 jobs, opening in early 2026. (more info)
🍀 Meehan’s is BACK, baby
After two weeks that felt like an eternity to some (I’m some), Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House reopens today! The old town pillar closed it’s doors mid-July to complete renovations and update the interior of the building, but will open once again at 11AM. Live music will be back on Thursday as Meehan’s welcomes Heather Craig to the Backyard stage at 1PM.
